Ronchamp's countryside

Dear Mother,

Janice very thoughtfully and carefully planned our trip to eastern France, but after we had done just about everything on her list for the day, we happened to see a sign pointing us toward the Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut de Ronchamp (Chapel of Our Lady of the Heights of Ronchamp).  Built in 1955 and designed by Le Corbusier, it is one of the nation's famous architectural structures.

The chapel is well off the beaten track, up in the mountains.  We had thought of working it into our plans but decided it would make the day too long.  However, seeing the sign was just too tempting, so I raced up the winding narrow country road to see if we could find the chapel.  As luck would have it, we arrived two minutes after it closed, and since there was considerable construction around the chapel, I could not photograph anything meaningfully.

However, the site was obviously selected because of its wonderful view of Ronchamp in the valley below, so I took a few photos so that I could remember the scenery, particularly as bursts of sunlight acted like spotlights highlighted aspects of the rolling hills.

We returned the car this morning, a few hours too late, but the young lady was compassionate.  The A6 had been unexpectedly closed, which delayed our return to St Maurice by several hours.  Just before returning the car, we dutifully filled up the gas tank.  We were later surprised when Avis asked to see our receipt for the petrol.  They wanted to write down the exact time when we had filled up, something I have never been asked in North America.  We then got our groceries for the next two days at the excellent Wed. market.  Now Janice is back at the office desk and I will soon go downtown to see what there is to see.

With love from us both,
Evan
