Saint Maurice Brocante

Hello,

Sorry, but I keep forgetting to take photos of the food we eat.  Perhaps I will eventually remember.  Meanwhile, we strolled (on Sunday) through the brocante (sort of garage sale/clean out the attic sale) in our Saint Maurice.  Four city blocks were blocked off and stalls lined both sides of the streets.  It was a sunny day, so some experienced vendors (frankly, some are professionals) had their own umbrellas.

It was also market day, so the usual folks were set up to sell produce and the like.

There were some long tables set up for people to use if they purchased a sausage, sauerkraut or whatever, and other things which would make a decent lunch for €5.  All proceeds from the vendors rents and the food sales went to the local schools to help pay for tutors for students requiring addition assistance.  This is an enlightened society.

A lot of stuff was in boxes which are fairly obviously carried weekly to the next brocante.  He was selling LPs.

I have a soft spot in my heart for French dishes, especially made by the historic Quimper, but nothing was available this time (much to Janice's relief).

The local bar did a brisk business with coffees and beer, while locals rested a bit before looking at still more stalls.

A jazz group played in the middle of one small square--a nothing square every day of the year except on brocante day.  The group was very good, highly disciplined, musical.  When I stood close to the saxophones, the sound was so rich.  They were not miced, so it was all natural sound.

Even Janice was not wearing gloves on this hot day.  Likely forgot.

This little girl was a delight.  I never quite captured her dancing to the music, but she was in her own world, moving as the music beat suggested.

Best of all, for once, we managed not to buy anything.  So we have been in France 11 days and still have nothing new to bring back.  A very good sign indeed.  However, the Alsace will surely change all that.

Evan
