Dear Mother,
Today, we bought strawberries at the Saturday covered market in nearby Charenton.
Today, we bought strawberries at the Saturday covered market in nearby Charenton.
Note the elongated shape, unlike the variety we buy from California when we're at home.
The side of the little box indicates that they were cultivated in soil.
More information is on the end of the box.
They are from the region of Gard in France, they're top quality, and the variety is gariguette.
And if you are curious where Gard is, there is a map on the bottom of the box showing the green area where the strawberries are grown, an area called the Costières de Nîmes, a wine region which is west of Avignon and Nîmes. Les Chênes Vert (The Green Oaks) has been a family firm for four generations.
What is missing is any reference to "bio", which means organic, so the berries probably are not, but otherwise, the documentation is quite complete! The description indicates that the berries even exude the fragrance of the earth--language borrowed from the neighbouring grape growers. Wish you could scratch and smell.
Love from us both,
Janice
